Marilyn Carlson Nelson and Trudy Rautio Honored as Outstanding Directors
Minneapolis | November 1, 2013
Two Carlson leaders were recently honored by Twin Cities Business magazine as two of 2013’s five most valued board members. Marilyn Carlson Nelson, former Carlson CEO and Chairman Emeritus, and current Carlson President and CEO, Trudy Rautio were both recognized as two of the most accomplished members of local business boards, selected for their distinguished and exemplary service.
Carlson Nelson received the award for Lifetime Achievement, in part for her trailblazing role as being one of only a few women—oftentimes the only woman-- in the boardroom in her early career. While that position as a minority could have held others back, Carlson Nelson used her unique role to be a tireless advocate for what she believes, a clear tenet of which is getting more women in top company leadership roles and in more boardrooms. This commitment is clearly reflected today at Carlson, where women serve in the top two most senior leadership roles--Rautio as President and CEO, and Diana Nelson, who succeeded Carlson Nelson as Chairman of the Board of Directors.
Carlson Nelson has served on dozens of boards throughout her career, including the Carlson Family Foundation as well as the Carlson Board of Directors, boards on which she still actively serves. In addition, she currently serves as the chair of the prestigious Mayo Clinic Board of Trustees. Of her leadership, former CEO of Medtronic, Bill George, has said, ‘She’s been a terrific chairperson for Mayo. She has great passion for the mission. She has a marvelous strategic vision of where Mayo can and should go.”
Carlson President and CEO Trudy Rautio also received well-earned recognition for her commitment to board service. Her award honored her service to Securian Financial Group. Regarding Rautio’s work with Securian, CEO Robert Senkler says, “She comes to meetings exceedingly well prepared. She asks very good questions with respect to numbers and people.” Rautio says that her time on that board has been helpful to her in her current role at Carlson. In addition to Securian, Rautio also serves on various boards including Carlson, CWT, the Rezidor Hotel Group, Imation and her undergraduate alma mater, the Bemidji State University Foundation.
